Changing life for the German people, 1933 - 1939Having taken control of the Reichstag in January 1933, Hitler and the Nazi party quickly sought to control every aspect of the lives of people living in Germany. They wanted to create a society that was dominated by Nazi ideology and systems. If you wanted a job it was best to go through the German Labour Front and employees built autobahns, hospitals and schools, or to become a teacher you had to be a member of the Nazi Teachers League and teach pupils all about bomb trajectories, furthermore, supposedly unprejudiced Judges swore an oath to Hitler – the workplace was controlled by the Nazis.
Moreover, German people’s free time was also swallowed up by Nazi groups such as the Strength Through Joy movement, which offered trips for being a good Nazi employee. Children’s free time was taken up by the Hitler Youth Movement, where boys and girls learned the importance of military drill, camping, cooking and cleaning. Propaganda was everywhere, driving home the message that to be a good Nazi was all that was required of German citizens and that Jews were corrupt and evil and deserving of the maltreatment dished out to them on Kristallknacht. If anyone stepped out of line, the Gestapo could root them out and interrogate them. Germany became a terror state – the Nazis changed the lives of the German people irrevocably.
