Changing Attitudes to the Race Issue in the USA, 1929 - 2000
The history of black people living in America during the 20th century has been one of struggle, protest and violence. From the discrimantion faced in the Southern States under the Jim Crow Laws, and racial injustice suffered in education, housing and employment, black people in America were never considered or treated equally to their white counterparts. However, a growing awareness and dissatisfaction with this injustice gave rise to figures such as Martin Luther King Jnr and Malcolm X. Moreover, groups like the NAACP urged black people towards a peaceful Civil Rights movement that led to the Civil Rights Act (1964), legally ending discrimination in the US. However, black people still suffered racism and many turned to join more violent groups like Black Power movement, Black Panther Party and Nation of Islam. Even today with the success of Barack Obama, the first black President of the USA, black people are still amongst the poorest members of American society.
